CMS again delays face-to-face rule
BALTIMORE – In response to ongoing concerns from providers and suppliers, CMS announced Sept. 9 that it is delaying enforcement of the face-to-face rule until sometime next year. This is the second delay of the rule, which would require health practitioners and their patients to meet in person within six months of the practitioner writing an order for durable medical equipment. CMS says the delay will allow providers and suppliers additional time to establish the protocols necessary to fully comply with the rule, which was originally slated to take effect July 1, 2013. CMS did not give a new date for implementation of the new requirement; the agency said it would make that announcement sometime next year.
