Being a Grinchy Grinch

Being a Grinchy Grinch

They're doing construction on the floor below us at HME News World HQ. All last week, they were sandblasting the ceilings down there, and, as a coworker put it, it sounded like we were working in a car wash.

Now, I'm OK with newsroom noise, jibber jabber and the white noise hum of our electric devices—even the occasional show tune from a few cubicles down, but the carwash noise (whoosh-whoosh-whoosh-WHOOSH) was making me extremely cranky. I felt like the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, "That's one thing I hate! All the noise, noise, noise, noise!"

Many apologies to all the people who had to listen to me whine last week. I finally did find something to break me out of my crankypants funk: an online, modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. I devoured all 34 3-minute episodes this weekend and came to work in a much better mood and ready to work this morning.

Of course, it helps that that particular noise seems to be over.

I think that must be a little bit of what it's like to be a provider right now. They're used to the usual "noise" of paperwork and patients, but now they've got this carwash noise of competitive bidding always roaring in the background.

So when we're calling around throughout the month, and I ask "Any new projects or programs? Any concerns?", all providers can tell me is that they're worried about competitive bidding.

But you can only be stressed and worried for so long before you go nuts—like I would have if they were still sandblasting downstairs when I came in this morning.

I hope something great comes along to kick the industry out if its crankypants funk - maybe it'll be the MPP score?
