CMS plans NPWT meeting

BALTIMORE - CMS has scheduled a July 9 public meeting to give industry stakeholders the chance to add their two cents on the agency's recent coding decision for negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT).

In April, CMS and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released a study that indicated there was no need for additional codes for NPWT product because there are no significant differences between products. That means NPWT products will most likely be included in an upcoming round of national competitive bidding, stakeholders say.

Last year, the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) exempted NPWT products from Round 1 of competitive bidding to allow time for a study of existing codes to ensure accurate reporting and billing for items and services.
