CMS schedules hearing on new PWC codes

July 26, 2004 WASHINGTON - CMS has scheduled a four-hour meeting for Sept. 1 to give the industry and other interested parties a chance to comment on preliminary coding and pricing changes for power wheelchairs. A Federal Register notice posted Friday announced the meeting, which will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.  at the CMS Auditorium in Baltimore. To date, there has been little discussion between the two sides on this issue aside from mutual agreement that changes to the K0011 are necessary. "[CMS] hasn't provide substantive comments, except for rejecting RATC and NCART's proposal, so this is a very significant development," said Seth Johnson, vice president of government affairs for Pride Mobility. NCART's proposal broke the existing K-codes into seven new codes based on the various levels of technology available in the power chair market. Johnson said there has been some talk that CMS is looking at limiting the changes to there of four codes. CMS said the new power wheelchair codes will draw from advice from the industry, SADMERC, DMERCs and other government agencies - namely the Veteran's Administration. "Ultimately we hope to have new codes implements by July 2005," said a CMS official.
