MIAMI - As part of "Operation Equity Excise," the U.S. attorney's office for the southern district of Florida announced Feb. 9 that it has recovered about $10.5 million in fraudulently obtained Medicare funds. It has also filed civil complaints against 23 clinics and DME companies seeking an additional $30 million in funds. In one case, the government said, a clinic fraudulently billed more than 3,758 claims to Medicare totaling more than $7.38 million between February 2006 and July 2006. The clinic listed a single physician as the prescribing physician on 2,923 of those claims, even though the physician was never affiliated with the clinic and never performed the billed services.
