Final PWC rule moves forward

WASHINGTON - CMS last week sent its final rule for power mobility device documentation to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for clearance, according to industry sources. The word on the street: The rule will be published in the Federal Register by the end of this week. The industry expects much of the rule to remain intact with one exception. CMS, taking into consideration industry comments, will likely extend the 30 days that physicians have to supply providers with documentation, industry sources said. The final rule, which went into effect April 1, will likely still require face-to-face exams and replace CMNs with prescriptions and physician notes. The industry's still crossing its fingers, however, that CMS will release additional information that clarifies physician documentation requirements. A legislative effort led by Invacare and Pride Mobility succeeded in halting the rule in late December. The rule originally went into effect Oct. 25, 2005.
