Fla. 02: ‘Few follow the rules’

Monday, March 31, 2008

The information in the (February) article, “Florida O2 inspections detect problems,” is not the entire requirement. Yes, Florida requires a respiratory therapist or RN on the initial oxygen setup, but there’s an additional requirement you did not mention: that an RT or RN visit every 90 days during the lifetime of the oxygen prescription to document compliance and utilization of the equipment. Many companies have not followed this requirement! I agree with Raul Lopez that most providers understand the requirement.
However, my experience is few follow the rules. My employer, RespiCare, was audited by Medicaid inspectors last year and I can assure you the inspectors have not been misinterpreting the documentation. They know exactly what they are looking for.
