HHS Secretary Thompson: one term and out

June 9, 2003 WASHINGTON - Tommy Thompson told the Associated Press last month that he would not serve a second term as HHS Secretary if President Bush wins re-election in 2004. Thompson apparently has no plans to step down as secretary prior to the 2004 election, and an HHS spokesperson downplayed the secretary's comment. The Associated Press simply asked Thompson if he would continue as HHS secretary if Bush wins re-election, and Thompson answered. Thompson did not issue a statement announcing his intention to step down in 2004, nor does he plan to, said the HHS spokesman. There's also a chance that something could happen between now and 2004 to change Thompson's mind, the spokesperson said.
