ELYRIA, Ohio - Invacare has acquired Freedom Designs, a California-based company that designs and manufactures seating products and wheelchairs with a focus on the pediatric marketplace.

Invacare announced the deal last week. Terms of the cash purchase were disclosed.

Freedom Designs will be operated as an independently run unit of Invacare, in a similar manner to a number of other subsidiaries at Invacare such as Motion Concepts, purchased in 2003. Freedom Designs will retain its own design and engineering staff and sales organization and will continue its mission of market leadership in the design and manufacture of seating and mobility solutions for the pediatric market.

"We are very pleased to have a company with a strong brand and product position in the pediatric market join Invacare," said A. Malachi Mixon, III, chairman and chief executive officer. "The addition of Freedom Designs continues Invacare's goal of adding accretive acquisitions to our core markets of home care and long term care."
