FAIRCHANCE, Pa.--Veech Breakwell, a sheet metal worker, received a Da Vinci award from the Michigan chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for inventing a braking system for wheelchairs, according to the Herald-Standard newspaper in December. Breakwell designed a system that can be operated from the back of the chair, giving the caregiver more control. A patent is pending for the system, which costs roughly $100.
