Medline plans limited competitive bidding play

MUNDELEIN, Ill. - Medline Industries plans to participate in national competitive bidding but only in the enteral nutrition category, the manufacturer/distributor announced last week. "Medline has been billing Medicare for more than 20 years for its enteral nutrition supplies on behalf of patients in nursing homes across the country, with a significant percentage located in the 10 chosen competitive bidding areas (CBAs)," said Tim Dundon, president of healthcare sales. "Because CMS did not exclude this sector, we consider it appropriate to attempt to protect our current base of business." If CMS awards a contract to Medline, the company plans to use a distribution system that includes independent HME providers, according to a release. Medline manufactures and distributes more than 100,000 products to hospitals, extended-care facilities, surgery centers, and homecare dealers and agencies. It has more than 800 dedicated sales reps and 56 wound care specialists nationwide.
