New meter: Early observations

New meter: Early observations

Yes, after much ado, I got the strips for my new meter. The insurer would still only authorize 1/3 of the prescription but I was so beaten down and discouraged (in other words, right where they wanted me) that I took it. Supposedly on the next go-round I can get the full load, but I'll believe that when I see it.

I also noted, on the prescription label another problem I'll have to deal with: Though it clearly states that it is a 30-day supply, it also states that I have 3 refills between now and July 2014. Sigh.

I have begun using the new meter, and while I haven't figured it all out yet, I like it so far. I love the touch screen, rather than trying to program and manuever through a system using a button. I do hope they are able to develop a more sensitive touch screen down the road: my poor needle-bitten fingers ain't as nimble as other people's.

I can log insulin doses (great!) but can't seem to load carb counts and let's face it, in Type 1, the two go hand in hand. Still, I am optimistic that when I figure out how to add notes, I can add that information there. Right now, that function brings me to a control test screen. My only other gripe: The screen is a bit dim, but again, maybe there's a way to lighten it up.

Needless to say I'll be playing with the meter this weekend when I have more time and will report back.

Ironically enough, no sooner had the CVS door (and, for the time being, my insurance battle) closed behind me than I found myself facing another one. Someone had backed into my car causing some minor damage (that bumper did it's job). Fortunately, he left an apology, his contact info and his insurance number. Unfortunately, I don't have as much faith in Geico as I do in some of the blue-chip type insurers, but I shall keep fingers crossed.
