New seating codes expected by January

WASHINGTON -- Industry sources expect CMS to release specific codes and allowables by Jan. 1, 2006 for adjustable seat cushion products. Since last fall, providers have had to bill the products -- adjustable skin cushions and adjustable skin protection and positioning cushion -- under the K0108 miscellaneous code. While CMS has attached adequate reimbursement to those codes, specific codes will make life much easier for providers who carry these products. That's because payers often required additional documentation to justify miscellaneous codes, said Tom Borcherding, The Roho Group's senior vice president of global medical sales. "Today the K0108 seems to be working within the four DMERCs because they are used to seeing claims for (K0108) products, but once you extend that out to Blue Cross and state Medicaids and all, it adds complexity."
