NPI registry delayed

WASHINGTON - CMS pushed back the launch date of an Internet-based national provider identification (NPI) registry from June 28 to Aug. 1. The agency said providers need more time to review their own data and make deletions or corrections. The NPI registry will consist of a downloadable Internet file with monthly file updates and a query-only database. Users can search the database by a provider's NPI or name and narrow the search with information like city or state. Providers have until July 16 to submit changes to the initial registry. Changes submitted to CMS after July 16 will be reflected in the next available monthly update file. A revised application/update form, CMS-10114, 05-07, has been posted at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/nationalprovidentstand/downloads/announcement_for_revised_NPI-application_form.pdf.
