WASHINGTON - The Office of Inspector General (OIG) expects to recover more than $3 billion from fighting healthcare fraud, waste and abuse for the first half of fiscal year 2010, it announced in its semi-annual report to Congress last week.
For October 2009 through March 2010, the OIG expects about $667 million in audit receivables and $2.5 billion in investigative receivables. It also expects 1,935 individuals and entities to be excluded from participating in federal healthcare programs, 293 criminal actions and 164 civil actions.
"As the department's health and human service programs expand, so does OIG's mission to protect these vital programs from fraud, waste and abuse," stated Inspector General Daniel Levinson in a release. "We have aggressively pursued new avenues of enforcement and are actively developing our operational strategy to successfully meet our growing oversight responsibilities."
In its report, the OIG highlighted the success of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, which it expects, during the first half of fiscal year 2010, to rack up the following numbers: 119 individuals or entities excluded, 42 convictions and $16 million in investigative receivables.
