MIAMI - A Miami pharmacy owner allegedly paid more than $1 million in illegal kickbacks to several DME owners in return for patient referrals, said the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami Aug. 3. Authorities charged Juan Carlos Castaneda, owner of International Surgical-Med Pharmaceuticals, with one count of conspiring to violate the Medicare Anti-Kickback Statute and two counts of paying illegal kickbacks. Prosecutors allege that between December 2000 and January 2004, pharmacy employees delivered respiratory medications to the referred patients on a monthly basis and billed Medicare.
