Recycling program receives accolade

MADISON, Wis. - The Mutual of America Foundation has given a thumbs up to the Madison, Wis.-based Wheelchair Recycling Program (WRP) for working with correctional facilities to repair wheelchairs and distribute them to low-income people with disabilities. The foundation honored the WRP and the state's Department of Corrections (DOC) with its Community Partnership Award for 2006, a local newspaper reported April 9. The DOC has wheelchair recycling and repair workshops at Redgranite Correctional Institution and Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution. Inmates helped the WRP repair and distribute 1,000 pieces of mobility equipment in 2006.
