Scully leaves CMS, joins lawfirm

December 22, 2003 WASHINGTON - CMS Administrator Tom Scully, who announced his resignation Dec. 3 and left the job Dec. 15, has joined the lawfirm of Alston & Bird. Scully will work in the firm's Washington office Dec. 18 and will focus on healthcare regulatory, strategic and public policy matters. Scully has been replaced at CMS on an interim basis by Dennis G. Smith, who is director of CMS' Center for Medicaid and State Operations. Although at times Scully battled with the industry over policy decisions, many applauded his hard work and dedication to improving the Medicare system. His open-door meetings for providers to ask questions stands as a hallmark of his tenure as CMS administrator, say industy watchers. “I think Scully brought tremendous energy to the job, and that that energy will be missed,” said healthcare attorney Elizabeth Hogue. “Whether you agree with or disagree with him, I think he was very committed to the job and took it very seriously and gave it his all, and it think that is a wonderful thing.”
