Smart wheelchair drives itself around

LULEA, Sweden - Sven Ronnback of Lulea University of Technology in Sweden recently unveiled an "intelligent" wheelchair that can drive itself. The prospective user group: severely handicapped individuals who find it difficult to steer a wheelchair, including those who have spinal injuries and those who have lost control of their arms and legs. With the chair's navigation system, individuals use their heads to operate a computer and a mouse. Ronnback explains the navigation system in his dissertation: "On Methods for Assistive Mobile Robots."
