SuperMed buys into women’s health biz

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - SuperMed, a full service HME supplier, in October bought the women’s health business Near To You. But, before moving forward with the partnership, SuperMed had to acknowledge its shortcomings.

This acknowledgment is why Near To You will continue to operate as a separate entity from its parent company and out of a separate location, said SuperMed’s owner, Alan Rabin.

“What has made Near To You so successful in the past has been its ability to create an environment for these individuals that they are comfortable in,” said Rabin. “This a traumatic event for many of them, it’s a private event, so to put it into a medical store is the wrong message. They are not looking it as a medical condition, they are looking it as a more of a lifestyle.”

Rabin also removed himself as the direct supervisor of operations.

“Me being a manager of a store of that type would probably be less appropriate than having someone in there who is a woman,” he said. “I know less about that business than someone else.”

Near To You was bought after the store’s original owner decided to retire, all of its other employees remained with the business, which employs three certified mastectomy fitters, said Rabin.

Along with post-mastectomy products, Near To You also sells lingerie and a variety of other women’s health items. SuperMed operates as a full-service supplier at its location in Ormond Beach, Fla.

“SuperMed has become a full-service supplier, but we have found some selective niches,” said Rabin. “[Women’s health] has become a very nice cash business for us.”
