Two HMEs join forces

PALATINE, Ill. - MedServ Equipment and Miller Medical have joined forces to "weather the storm" of competitive bidding and other changes in reimbursement. MedServ acquired the 11-year-old Miller Medical in June, adding a warehouse and vehicle fleet in Arlington Heights, Ill., and five employees. The company already has a large showroom and offices in Palatine, Ill., and half a dozen employees. "With what's going on in the market, we wanted economies of scale, especially for efficiency purposes," said Barbara Evans, MedServ's marketing director. Robert Miller, the owner of Miller Medical, agreed. "By joining forces, I think we can better weather the storm, or at least better than we can by staying independent," said Miller, who's now a general manager at MedServ. MedServ and Miller Medical have fit together like two pieces of a puzzle, company officials say. Both offer a wide variety of HME, but Miller's known for seating and positioning, a service MedServ didn't provide. Additionally, Miller brings new payers to the table--about 65% Medicare and 55% private-pay. "We saw an opportunity to combine with a company that had different strengths than we did," Evans said. MedServ's showroom has helped the company earn a reputation for retail and customer service. Much of its business comprises lifts for stairs, vehicles and porches.
