SEATTLE - Diabetes complications cost about $10,000 a year per patient, with patients paying nearly $1,600 of that themselves. A survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics between 1999 and 2004 found that the cost of treating diabetes complications in the United States was estimated at $22.9 billion in 2006. Three out of every five patients with Type 2 diabetes suffers from at least one complication like heart disease, stroke, eye damage, kidney disease or nerve damage; 1 out of every 2 has two complications, 1 out of 15 has three and 1 out of 14 has four or more.
