What will it be: horn or spittoon?

I would like to compliment Carolyn Cole on her commentary (“Bravo, Barack, for telling the world,” May 2009). Yes, people dream about going home. Home care is the trifecta of health care: patient preferred, better outcomes and the most cost effective.
Starting with our own industry, touting the trifecta message would benefit all stakeholders in the healthcare debate. This is particularly true when we have a sitting president who has publicly talked about his grandmother being in a homecare setting in her Honolulu apartment at the end of her life. It is telling that nobody, starting with our own industry, talks about the fact that she was in a home healthcare setting. As the saying goes, if you don't toot your own horn, someone will use it as a spittoon!
The role that home healthcare plays is so obvious, yet very little attention is paid to what and who makes this possible. The American public takes things for granted until they are either not there anymore or are only available in a severely reduced form.
Home care is part of the solution to the nation's healthcare challenge.
