Wheelchair ramp franchise expands in New Jersey

January 26, 2004 SOUTH BOSTON - American Ramp Systems, a firm specializing in modular metal ramps for wheelchairs and other users, plans to open five franchises in New Jersey in the coming months, company officials announced. The first of the five franchises is set to open at the end of next month in Bergen County, reported the Newark Star-Ledger. "New Jersey has been excellent for our business,"said Julian Gordon, the founder and president of Gordon Industries, the construction company that developed and patented the metal ramp system that gave rise to a new division, American Ramp Systems, in 1998. The company began franchising in 2002. "New Jersey has an older population and a high level of medical infrastructure. We find there is a very active group of professionals in health care who have been very receptive to what we are doing,"Gordon said. American Ramp Systems has been doing business in New Jersey for seven years, using an Englishtown dealer -- Accessibility Design Associates -- to handle sales, rental and installation of the portable ramps. Final 2003 sales for American Ramp Systems are expected to reach $5 million, up 27 percent over the previous year, Gordon said. "We are the people who are called in when people already have their wheelchairs or hospital beds and are ready to be discharged. The next question is, how do we get them in and out of their house,"said Patrick Sherwood, the owner and president of Accessibility Design Associates.
