Payments for HME: Inappropriate?
A Senate Finance Committee document that lists revenue options for financing healthcare reform "targets Medicare home medical equipment payments for potential reduction in reimbursements but does not propose specific cuts," according to AAHomecare.
The 41-page document states that some DME is over-reimbursed, other DME is under-reimbursed. The former, according to the OIG, includes power wheelchairs, hospital beds, diabetic supplies and home oxygen equipment. Also making that list: negative pressure wound therapy.
The message the Finance Committee appears to be sending: It may not be proposing specific cuts to DME to help finance healthcare reform, or at least not right now, but it's a card that it could play at any moment.
