Stakeholders size up Biden vs. Trump

September 18, 2020Theresa Flaherty, Managing Editor

WASHINGTON - How will the November elections impact the HME industry? There are a number of dynamics at play in the presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump and in the various races in the House of Representatives and Senate, says John Leppard, a health care analyst with Washington Analysis. “At the top of the line: a Biden win-Democratic sweep is probably a net slightly positive in the near- to medium-term as it augurs greater stability,” he said. “He's...

WASHINGTON - A number of champions for the HME industry, including Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., have won their re-election bids in Congress. McMorris-Rodgers, who bested her Democratic contender Lisa Brown, has led a number of efforts to provide relief from Medicare's competitive bidding program, including introducing H.R. 4229, which has 157 co-sponsors. She has also spearheaded a number of congressional sign-on letters to CMS requesting relief. A number of champions for complex...

One consultant's take: 'I've never seen people so positive'

December 16, 2016Liz Beaulieu, Editor

I was on the phone this week with a seasoned consultant who advises medical device companies on strategic plans and M&A. He said he's gearing up for a very busy 2017. “Since the election, I've been working with a number of companies on strategic plans,” he told me. “I though it might take them half way into next year to make moves—that they wanted to see the 'proof in the pudding' of a more business-friendly administration—but people are making moves...

Trump, man of mystery

November 11, 2016Theresa Flaherty, Managing Editor

WASHINGTON - Industry stakeholders are looking ahead at what a Trump presidency could mean for HME. “If it was anyone other than Donald Trump, I would be able to tell you a lot more,” said Cara Bachenheimer, senior vice president of government relations for Invacare. “He's not a traditional Republican. It's unclear what his congressional agenda is and what his proposals really mean.” What is clear is that Trump, a businessman with no political experience, struck...

Stakeholders prepare for 'complicated' post-election activity

October 21, 2016Theresa Flaherty, Managing Editor

WASHINGTON - The chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee could be one thing standing between the HME industry and competitive bidding relief after the elections. While Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., doesn't have substantial objections to the industry's efforts to retroactively delay a July 1 cut in Medicare reimbursement in non-bid areas, he's laser focused on getting the 21st Century Cures Act passed before the end of the year, stakeholders say. “It's complicated,”...

Election 2016: HME providers cast their lot with Trump

September 16, 2016Theresa Flaherty, Managing Editor

YARMOUTH, Maine - HME providers typically lean Republican when it comes to politics and that holds true for the 2016 presidential election—even if some are aren't overly enthusiastic about the party's candidate. Sixty-four percent of poll respondents report they favor Donald Trump, saying the billionaire businessman would turn the economy around. “Mr. Trump is a businessman first, so I think he will lead our nation in a better direction financially,” said one poll...

New administration wouldn't solve healthcare problems

September 25, 2012Guest Commentary

The HME industry will not find a savior to vote for in this year's presidential election. Some form of competitive bidding will march on as long as Medicare continues to exist, regardless of who is elected president. The deluge of audits will continue. That's because a giant bureaucracy known as CMS has been steering the boat for years now. That didn't begin under President Obama and it won't end if Republicans take control of the White House. It's hardly politically popular...

Biggest factor in presidential election? Business

September 21, 2012Theresa Flaherty, Managing Editor

YARMOUTH, Maine - When it comes to the November presidential election, HME providers say they are voting with their pocketbooks. A whopping 75% of respondents to a recent HME NewsPoll said they plan to cast their vote for Republican candidate Mitt Romney because he understands and supports small business. "I'm interested in the candidate who is pro-small business and I believe Romney to be that candidate," said Brian Keith, Tarheel Mobility & Service Center in North Carolina. "Being in...
