WASHINGTON - CMS should continue with its prior authorization programs and expand prior authorizations to include power wheelchair accessories, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office.The prior authorization demonstration project launched in seven states in 2012 and was expanded to an additional 12 states in 2014. BALTIMORE - CMS may implement prior authorizations for certain durable equipment, it announced May 22.Through a proposed rule to be published in the May 28 Federal Register, the agency will seek comments on the prior authorization process, as well as criteria for establishing a list of DME that is frequently overutilized.
