European COPD, lung cancer cases expected to rise, report says

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - Rates of COPD and lung cancer are expected to rise across Europe in the next two decades, the European Respiratory Society said in a report released Sept. 5. Lung diseases like infections, COPD, tuberculosis and cancer already cause one in 10 European deaths, news organizations say, but that number will grow as more people develop lung disease as a result of smoking. The European Lung White Book calls smoking the continent's worst health hazard and notes that although smoking rates have fallen, the long-term effects of smoking are keeping the rate of lung disease high, costing around $511 billion per year.
