Golden unveils seating

OLD FORGE, Pa. - No one's more pleased than Bobby Spencer that Golden Technologies has come out with a new line of seating for consumer power wheelchairs. "Many consumer power chairs have a bucket seat with one or two sizes available, and most people can't fit in a one or two size seat," said Spencer, a medical equipment specialist at Columbus Medical Equipment in Columbus, Ohio. "So to have a full line of seating options to meet individual needs is crucial." Until February, all of Golden's consumer power chairs came with an 18-inch by 18-inch seat in either black or sand. But with the launch of its Spectrum Seating Program, Golden now offers three seats in three colors in 45 sizes. "For us, this is the biggest thing since 1998 when we introduced our power chairs," said C.J. Copley, vice president or marketing. "We are already looking at the next round of seats and how we can make them better and tailor them a little differently to be more comfortable." Prior to launching the Spectrum line, if a provider needed seating other than Golden's standard chair, he had to wait for the company to make a custom product. Often, that wait, which could be as long as four to five weeks, drove the provider into a competitor's open arms, Copley said. "We weren't doing it properly," he said. "We tried to do it because we always try to do what our dealers ask for. But when you have a patient and the doctor says he needs it by Thursday, sometimes you can't wait, and it is outside the dealer's control." Now, when it comes to seating options for its consumer power chairs, Golden officials feel they can compete with anyone in the marketplace.
