Home Medical plugs 'big hole' in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. - Once the paint dries, the expansion of Broadway Home Medical's new 8,000- square-foot facility will be complete, but that's not the only thing that's new.

Besides doubling its space, provider Brian Lindsey changed the company name from Lindsey Medical Supply to match his other Broadway Home Medical location, also in Wichita. The new store will also accept Medicare and private insurance—a departure from Lindsey's previous cash-only model.

“People would come into Lindsey and ask if we did insurance, so we would send them to our Broadway store,” said Lindsey, who co-owns the two stores and another in Oklahoma City with his father. “Now we hit both sides of town.”

Founded in 1994, Broadway Home Medical offers a full range of HME, including mobility and oxygen equipment.

Over the last few years, Lindsey says he's lost two or three competitors to competitive bidding, and credits his success to a strong retail business.

“There were a couple of medical supply stores that did Medicare,” he said. “They did a little bit of retail, but they didn't jump in all the way and that really hurt them. Once they went out of business, it left a big hole in the west side of   Wichita.”

Currently, Lindsey says he's focused on transitioning to Medicare and training staff, but he's not opposed to the idea of expanding.

“Possibly in 2016, we'll add a fourth location in Oklahoma,” he said.
