On The Mend built for speed

SOUTHBURY, Conn. - With business booming, On the Mend Supplies & Medical Equipment recently opened a second location, featuring a 2,500-square-foot showroom in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., and is close to an agreement on another 4,000 square feet of warehouse space to centralize distribution.

“We have already begun looking for space in our designated third location and have an aggressive plan of four more in the next three years,” said Liam O'Keeffe, co-owner, who plans on expanding as far south as Florida.

Much of the provider's growth can be credited to O'Keeffe's belief in never showing up empty handed. It's part of the business model, says O'Keeffe.

“Let's say we're delivering a rental hospital bed,” he said. “We'll call the customer and say, 'Hey, we're on our way, would you like us to pick up anything? We're making a difference and honestly, it also helps get referrals.”

Founded in 2016 in Southbury, Conn., On The Mend offers mobility products, CPAP devices, hospital beds, patient lifts, bathroom safety and incontinence supplies, and offers free in-home assessments and demos, which gives them an edge over the competition, says O'Keeffe.

"If you want a power chair, we'll bring a few to your home and make sure it works in your environment,” he said. “Everything works in my store. I have no transition problems in my doorways, I have nice flat wide aisles, but (that's not the case with) a 1962 old farmhouse.”
O'Keeffe also describes On The Mend as a “now" center.

“We keep a lot of inventory so if you called me today and said, 'I need a hospital bed at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Bridgeport or Manhattan,' I'll be there with a hospital bed,” he said. “That's what I'm built for.”
