PHS expands core, strengthens reach

PHS expands core, strengthens reach

ROSEVILLE, Minn. - Pediatric Home Service's recent acquisition of RSVP Home Care “checked off” several boxes for the provider as it looks to grow its national footprint, says CEO Cameo Zehnder.

First and foremost, the Covington, Ky.-based RSVP, which offers pediatric equipment and services, and its adult division, Pulmonary Partners, have a patient-centered focus that aligns with the core mission of PHS.

“When we look at opportunities, we're looking at organizations that put patients first and have that focus on clinical excellence and quality service, and we found that with RSVP,” said Zehnder. “We believe that every child deserves that level of care that only a pediatric specialist can offer.”

The deal also gives PHS a presence in Kentucky and Ohio as it works to build a national platform.

In 2018, the provider partnered with InTandem Capital Partners, a healthcare services-focused private equity firm, to boost expansion plans. In January, PHS acquired the Texas-based Care Group, with locations in Houston and Dallas.

When looking at how and where it wants to grow, PHS focuses on the local community, says Zehnder. In the case of RSVP, both Kentucky and Ohio have renowned children's hospitals.

“As we look at the potential to partner with organizations or look at de novo growth, (we like) locations that value the contribution of home and community-based care for children,” she said. “The Kentucky-Ohio area checks that box and RSVP has well-established partnerships with referring hospitals.”

The existing staff and management teams of both RSVP and Pulmonary Partners, including RSVP founder Mike Downing, will remain on board. RSVP will co-brand with PHS for the next six to 12 months before moving under the PHS umbrella, while Pulmonary Partners will retain its name.

Zehnder says it's important to recognize that different site locations operate in different communities, each with its own nuances, says Zehnder.

“Whether it is in standards of practice or payer relationships, we believe strongly that we need to have staff that can appreciate that,” she said.
