MIAMI – Shop Home Med is responding to rising health care costs and unpredictable insurance coverage with a new initiative: “Little Hands,” a crowdfunding platform designed to connect families in need directly with donors who want to help.
“This is our first time launching a crowdfunding initiative, and it was inspired by the growing number of families forced to delay – or forgo entirely – essential medical equipment due to steep out-of-pocket costs,” said Ezrie Myers, COO.
Little Hands allows families to build personalized campaigns for items like wheelchairs, adaptive strollers and car seats. Unlike third-party platforms, 100% of the funds go toward equipment purchases, and once a goal is met, Shop Home Med ships the item directly to the recipient.
Shop Home Med also offers support throughout the process, assisting with campaign setup, storytelling and product selection. To help launch the program, the company is matching up to $250 for the first few campaigns launched through the platform.
Due to the challenges in access families with small children often face, the program’s focus has centered on pediatric equipment.
“That said, we recognize the broader need and are open to expanding our support to adults in the future,” said Myers.
While Shop Home Med may be one of the first supply companies to host its own crowdfunding model, Myers says, they probably won’t be the last.
“This model may not be right for every business, but it felt right for us,” he said. “It aligns with our mission of giving back and supporting the health and wellness of the entire family. In today’s world, where transparency, trust and community support are more important than ever, we do think more businesses will explore models like this, especially those with a purpose-driven approach.”
