SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Department of Health Care Services will not require treatment authorization requests (TARs) when the cumulative cost for wheelchair repair maintenance or replacement parts is less than or equal to $2,500 within a calendar month, the National Coalition for Assistive & Rehab Technology (NCART) has announced. “NCART members, consumers, and the California Department of Health Care Services have been meeting to improve the CRT benefit for California consumers,” the organization stated in an email bulletin. “With the help of Assemblywoman Maggy Krell, there have been substantial improvements for consumers who utilize CRT.” The department will require TARs (either retroactive or prior authorization) when the cumulative cost is greater than $2,500 within a calendar month. NCART also noted that for members who receive DME through their assigned Medi-Cal manage care plan, providers must adhere to those individual plans, which may include prior authorization requirements.
