Q. Why should HME providers consider launching a continuous glucose monitor resupply program now?
A. Diabetes impacts more than 37 million Americans, many of whom rely on daily glucose monitoring to manage their condition and prevent serious complications. In recent years, the standard of care has evolved with the widespread adoption of CGMs—small, wearable devices that provide real-time glucose readings through a sensor placed under the skin. As these devices become more mainstream, they present a significant opportunity for HME providers to enter a high-growth, high-impact segment of health care.
Insurance coverage for CGMs has expanded, patient demand continues to grow and health care providers are increasingly recommending CGMs as part of a comprehensive diabetes care plan. For HME providers already managing resupply-based product lines like CPAP, wound care, urological or ostomy supplies, adding CGMs to the portfolio is a logical next step.
One of the most compelling aspects of entering the CGM market is how easily it aligns with the existing capabilities of HME businesses. Most providers already have the infrastructure needed to support a successful CGM program—billing systems, patient outreach tools, wholesale delivery logistics and clinical relationships are already in place. This makes integration both efficient and cost-effective.
CGMs offer a recurring revenue model, with supplies typically shipped every 30 to 90 days. This cadence mirrors other resupply businesses and contributes to stable, predictable income streams. In addition, patient compliance with CGMs tends to be high, which not only supports steady resupply but also positions the HME provider as a valuable ally to prescribing physicians and hospital systems.
CGMs have a direct impact on improving patient outcomes. Reliable access to these devices helps individuals manage their glucose levels more effectively, reduce emergency events and live healthier lives. In this way, HME providers do more than expand their business—they strengthen their role as partners in patient-centered care.
