Taking stock: Challenges, yes – but also progress

Taking stock: Challenges, yes – but also progress

When Managing Editor Theresa Flaherty and I sat down to brainstorm ideas for the cartoon for the June issue, we made a conscious decision to steer clear of the usual suspects: Medicare, CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, and the industry’s ongoing regulatory pressure points – competitive bidding, supplier moratoriums, fraud.

Those topics have fueled more than a few recent cartoons, and for good reason. But this month, we wanted to take a step back.

Instead, we landed on another very real pressure point: rising fuel costs. The home medical equipment (HME) industry is already operating on thin margins and now faces another layer of cost pressure.

For an industry built on daily deliveries and setups – from hospital beds and oxygen concentrators to mobility equipment – fuel isn’t incidental. It’s foundational. It’s also why companies like Home Oxygen Company in California, where fuel prices are among the highest in the country, have already transitioned their fleets to electric – well before the latest spikes.

So yes, the cartoon still reflects an “industry challenges” theme, and it’s one worth highlighting. We also put the question directly to providers in the HME Newspoll to better understand how fuel costs are impacting operations.

But as we stepped back, another theme emerged – one that, ultimately, shaped this issue in a bigger way: There’s a notable amount of forward movement happening across the industry.

Consider just a few of the stories in these pages:

Individually, these are solid business stories. Taken together, they tell a broader story: This is an industry that continues to adapt, invest and find ways to grow – even in a difficult operating environment.

The challenges aren’t going anywhere, and they will continue to demand attention. But they’re not the only story.

This issue is a reminder that HME remains a dynamic, evolving market where companies are still making strategic moves, pursuing new opportunities and, importantly, pushing forward.
