CMS notifies states of ‘commonsense guardrails’ to Medicaid & CHIP

WASHINGTON – CMS has sent letters to states calling out policies that extend beyond statutory limits in the Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) program, specifically policies on continuous eligibility and workforce initiatives.

WASHINGTON – CMS says a recent analysis of 2024 enrollment data identified 2.8 million Americans who are either enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in multiple states or simultaneously enrolled in both Medicare/CHIP and a subsidized Affordable Care Act (ACA) Exchange plan.
The agency says it is taking action to ensure individuals are only enrolled in one program, potentially saving taxpayers about $14 billion annually.

WASHINGTON – A record more than 80 million individuals now have health coverage through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), according to a new Enrollment Trends Snapshot Report that CMS released this week.
Nearly 9.9 million individuals, a 13.9% increase, enrolled in coverage between February 2020, the month before the public health emergency was declared, and January 2021, according to the report, which is released monthly.

WASHINGTON - The Department of Health and Human Services will waive or modify requirements for Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP providers in New York and New Jersey due to Hurricane Sandy.
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has declared a public health emergency in the two states under section 1135 of the Social Security Act, clearing the way for providers to submit waiver requests to CMS for at least 60 days.
