Advocacy groups back providers

WASHINGTON - While fighting an attempt by Congress to eliminate the first-month purchase option for power wheelchairs in September, the rehab industry received a strong showing of support from several disability advocacy groups: The American Association for People with Disabilities, the ALS Association, Easter Seals, the National Council on Independent Living, the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the United Spinal Association. Legislators didn't end up including the provision in their bill to expand children's health insurance, but the industry's new friends may still come in handy. Legislators are looking for a way to avoid cutting physician reimbursement by 10% on Jan. 1, 2008.
