Apria boosts infusion through GPO partnership
LAKE FOREST, Calif. - Apria Healthcare, hoping to add more muscle to its home infusion operations, recently joined New York-based Innovatix, a leading group purchasing organization. The exclusive membership will grant Apria access to the GPO's preferred pricing agreements, as well as influence on its lobbying efforts and a place on its advisory board. “The more members you have, the better the pricing you can negotiate with the manufacturers,” said Shelly Ballet, Innovatix's director of marketing. Innovatix has more then 3,800 members nationwide, in each of its business segments. Its other corporate home infusion members include Corum, Lincare and American Home Patient.
Relationship suggested between reflux and OSA
BALTIMORE - Millions of Americans have gastroesophageal reflux, many without having symptoms. Similarly, many Americans suffer from daytime sleepiness caused by undiagnosed sleep apnea. Now, a recent study has linked the two ailments, saying GER may contribute to sleep apnea arousals. “Our preliminary findings suggest that there may be a causal relationship between GER events and sleep events in patients with OSA,” said the study's lead researcher. Previous studies have shown that people with GER have problems sleeping, but researchers have not been able to show that reflux can lead to complete obstruction of the airway.
Local business yield to pharmacy giant
GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen Health Systems recently sold its four Park Pharmacy locations to CVS, after the pharmacy giant made an unsolicited bid for the sale and closure of the local chain, according to the Times-Union newspaper. GHS officials said the uncertain economic future of the retail pharmacy business prompted them to accept CVS's offer. GHS will retain ownership of Park Home Medical Equipment and the Park Boutique at the Retreat Women's Health Center. The company also plans to increase its resources in health care services, including purchasing new technology and helping to create prevention programs in the area.
