When HME News first caught up with Bob Rutan in 2009, he had just torn up a T-Shirt to come up with the prototype for the RemZzzs CPAP mask liner. The company has come a long way since then. For starters, it has been awarded Medicare coverage under codes A7031 and A7032, the same codes used for mask cushions. Here are a few other updates on the company:
Selling through providers
Originally, Rutan sold most of the liners through a website. But as the word got out to HME providers and sleep labs, that has shifted. He now estimates 95% of the people who use the liners get them through healthcare professionals.
Hitting the road—again
Rutan has taken his message and his mask liners on tour before. About a year and a half ago, he and his wife spent two months traveling out West in a motor coach. “We visited with people on a grassroots level and it seemed like everyone wanted to talk about how they were struggling with CPAP therapy,” he said.
Reaping the rewards
Rutan doesn't like to toot his own horn, but now that his wife has been using the mask liners, she feels better than ever. “She just needed something to make it work and now she'd never go back,”
he said.
Looking forward
Although he has since added new mask liners to the mix, Rutan is eyeing Medtrade in Atlanta in October to launch a new product. “People struggle with pillows up against their face; they get rashes,” he said. “So we're hoping to launch something around that.”
