Specialty expands Chinese floor space

January 3, 2005 CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -  Specialty Medical Supplies, the private label OEM manufacturer of lancets for companies like Invacare and Liberty Medical, has expanded its manufacturing facility in mainland China by 30,000 square feet and has extended its agreement with the Chinese government for another 10 years. Specialty started work in China four to five years ago and opened its own wholly owned manufacturing facility two years ago. China, according to Specialty Vice President Chip Starnes, is increasingly attracted to companies that make more sophisticated products. “You need to bring some high-tech design and patent-able features, and value other than just trying to make a cheap product,” said Starnes. About 90% of Specialty's products are private label. Manufacturing in China enables Specialty to deliver high quality at a low cost, said Starnes. “We can sell at the same cost as generic label from another company,” he said. “And then they [Specialty's customers] can put their name and phone number out there in the marketplace at no additional cost.”
