WASHINGTON – Complex rehab stakeholders have updated www.rise4access.org with instructions for how to submit comments on a proposed national coverage determination for power seat elevation systems.
The website also provides suggested talking points.
“It is critical that CMS receives as many supportive stakeholder comments as possible, including both detailed organizational comments and individual comments from wheelchair users, caregivers, health care providers, manufacturers, friends, family and all other advocates,” NCART stated in a bulletin.
CMS is accepting comments on the proposed NCD until March 17.
The proposed NCD, which the agency published on Feb. 15, makes the case that power seat elevation systems are reasonable and necessary for individuals using Group 3 power wheelchairs when the following conditions are met: the individual performs weight-bearing transfers to/from the power wheelchair while in the home; and the individual has undergone a specialty evaluation by a practitioner who has specific training and experience in wheelchair evaluations, such as a PT or OT.
In the proposed NCD, CMS also seeks comments on whether seat elevation systems should be considered for Group 2 wheelchairs.
“This is an opportunity to expand access beyond our initial request and we encourage advocates to support this additional coverage in their comments,” NCART stated.
