Stakeholders ‘come together’ for awareness week

Mickae LeeWASHINGTON – About 95 organizations participated in National CRT Awareness Week, which was held the week of Sept. 20 in concert with the Virtual CRT Congressional Fly-in, says Mickae Lee.

Last year, the event drew about 60 organizations.

“It’s really exciting to see that growth,” said Lee, the associate director of NCART, which organized the event with NRRTS. “We weren’t really sure about having the fly-in as part of CRT Awareness Week, but there was a nice ripple effect.”

The event was dedicated to raising awareness of complex rehab technology, mainly on social media, with NCART and NRRTS calling on different stakeholders – consumers, clinicians, providers and manufacturers – to participate on a certain day of the week.

In addition to increased participation, the event saw different types of participation. Most posts were on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, but there were even posts on Instagram and TikTok this year, Lee says.

“There were also more posts that included video,” she said. “It was good to see everyone coming together over the course of those five days like we had hoped.”

NRRTS also pieced together a full day of events on Sept. 23 that included panel discussions and other events on Zoom and Facebook Live and that involved dozens of speakers and other participants, says Weesie Walker, executive director.

“It started at 9 a.m. and ended at 7 p.m.,” she said. “The funny part is, I thought I might do some work while tuning in, but I was glued to it the whole day. It was like bingeing on some Netflix series.”

The event, combined with the fly-in, goes a long way toward increasing awareness of complex rehab, particularly for newer members of Congress, Walker says.

“Most people don’t understand what it means and why it’s important,” she said. “My state, Georgia, has two new senators. They didn’t seem to be familiar with CRT. That’s why we need to continue doing this.”
