WASHINGTON - Medicare providers received a paperwork break Jan. 1 courtesy of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003.

As of Jan. 1, 2005, a signed assignment of benefits (AOB) form does not have to be obtained from a beneficiary when a service can only be paid on as assignment-related basis. This includes any mandatory assignment situations and participating physician or supplier situations, according to CMS.
