NEW ORLEANS - The United Way has purchased two large containers to store items like food, cots, medicine, wheelchairs and other equipment for special-needs evacuees in St. Tammany Parish, La., for use when another major hurricane strikes. John Tobin, administrative liaison for the parish, said that during Hurricane Katrina 600 evacuees sheltering at Covington High School had to wait for special medical equipment and supplies to arrive from local DMEs and hospitals. About a year ago, Tobin began collecting goods after Katrina showed him that the parish needed to be better prepared to help special-needs evacuees.
