Advocacy: Pull up more chairs

Advocacy: Pull up more chairs

Lisa WellsQ. How can HME providers ethically partner with customers to build powerful, authentic advocacy stories?

A. In advocacy, stories are everything. They cut through political noise, put a face to policy and remind decision-makers that every vote has a human cost. Yet, too often, the very people most affected (seniors and people with disabilities) are left out of shaping the narrative.

That’s why the disability rights community has long championed the phrase “Nothing for Us, Without Us.” It’s more than a slogan; it’s a moral compass.

Campaigns about access, dignity and independence must center the voices of those living the reality. When we co-create stories with customers, we honor their experiences and bring authenticity to our message.

Here’s the truth: Fear doesn’t build movements. It may spark urgency, but it rarely inspires lasting action.

Seniors and people with disabilities don’t need more anxiety about the future. What they need is hope—hope that their voices shape better policies, that their independence is worth protecting, and that they are not alone in this fight. Advocacy campaigns rooted in empowerment will spark action instead of reluctance.

And let’s be honest: When only industry leaders sit at the table, it can look like we’re leading with our wallets instead of our hearts. Lawmakers can sense when a message sounds like economics instead of humanity.

The fix? Pull up more chairs.

Invite customers in. Make them co-authors of the message. Saving reimbursement matters, yes, but saving lives while preserving independence matters more.

So, when we ask, listen and let customers review and approve how their stories are used, we build more than campaigns; we build trust. That trust creates better advocates, stronger communities and lasting change.

Because when it comes to independence, dignity and access, truly there is nothing for us, without us.
