Digital Health: Anticipate problems

Robin RandolphQ. What digital health tools and strategies will give DME providers a competitive edge in the next 3-5 years?

A. Many DME providers are still using telehealth as a way to react to patient problems – troubleshooting when there’s already an issue. But the biggest gains in the next few years will come from tools that allow you to anticipate problems before they affect compliance, outcomes, or reimbursement. Think of it like equipment maintenance: You wouldn’t wait for a concentrator to break before servicing it. The same principle applies to patient care – the earlier you can detect an issue, the easier (and cheaper) it is to fix.

These digital health solutions gaining traction could set you apart:

AI-driven patient management platforms

These platforms pull in data from CPAP devices, oxygen concentrators, glucose monitors and blood pressure cuffs, then use algorithms to spot trends – like gradual decreases in usage or changes in vital signs – before they reach a compliance threshold.

Predictive analytics for readmission risk

Some systems can combine patient history, device data and self-reported symptoms to forecast who’s most likely to require an ER visit or hospital readmission. Acting early not only helps the patient but also strengthens your value proposition with payers and referral sources.

Remote setup and training tools

Augmented reality (AR) or step-by-step guided video apps can walk patients through device setup without requiring an in-person visit – a major time saver for both staff and patients in rural or high-volume markets.

Automated patient engagement

Text-message reminders, progress dashboards and gamified compliance trackers can nudge patients to stay on therapy – and let you track who’s engaged and who’s drifting.

For DME providers, chronic disease management like diabetes, cardiac and hypertension, and sleep apnea, are where you can make the most impact. By building expertise in one or more of these areas – and marketing that expertise to physicians and health systems – you position yourself as more than a supplier; you become a care partner.
