FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Aptiva Medical, a provider of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems and a portfolio company of Greenleaf Ventures, has completed its acquisition of VeraMed Health.
The company says the transaction significantly expands its patient base, strengthens its referral and payer networks, and accelerates its rapid growth – further reinforcing its leadership in delivering advanced diabetes management solutions to patients across the country.
"This acquisition aligns perfectly with Aptiva Medical's mission to build a leading, nationwide direct-to-patient CGM business," said David Wallace, co-founder and managing partner of Greenleaf Ventures. "The VeraMed team has built an excellent foundation of patient care, and Aptiva Medical will ensure a seamless transition for every patient while continuing to raise the bar on service and efficiency."
Wallace and Timothy Stocksdale, co-founder of Greenleaf Ventures, have a long track record of building and scaling successful health care companies in the medical supply and pharmacy sectors, including Access Diabetic Supply, Arriva Medical, Comfort Medical, and AmerimedRx. In 2014, they acquired Liberty Medical out of bankruptcy and restructured it, later selling it to Cardinal Health.
NHIA white paper outlines negative impact of competitive bidding on home enteral nutrition
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) has released a new white paper, “Trends in Home Enteral Nutrition—The Impacts of Competitive Bidding on Access and Quality,” that documents the declining payment structure for the clinical services needed to support patients on this therapy.
An estimated 220,000 individuals in the United States rely on home enteral nutrition (HEN), a therapy that demands clinical coordination, specialized equipment, disease-specific nutrition formulas, and a multidisciplinary team to ensure safety, efficacy and quality of life, the NHIA says.
The impact of competitive bidding and other payer policies
Although government reports say that competitive bidding has not negatively impacted access to HEN, NHIA reviewed publicly available Medicare DME utilization data and found the number of suppliers billing for HEN kits has decreased by 31% over the past decade, while the number of Medicare beneficiaries accessing HEN has declined by 27%.
The association says the market conditions created by competitive bidding may also influence other payer policies. One in four HEN providers are considering or planning to discontinue providing HEN formulas or supplies due to cost pressures, according to reports.
NHIA recommends reforms
NHIA believes that certain reforms would improve outcomes and the quality of life in HEN patients, while lowering the total cost of care. It recommends that CMS:
- Perform a comprehensive study of HEN services, patient access and impacts on overall costs of care;
- Develop new supplier standards to reflect clinical support expectations and standardized outcomes; and
- Develop a new service code for clinical activities such as performing nutritional assessments, monitoring nutritional status, making formula changes, troubleshooting problems and providing nutrition education and support.

NCPA launches pilot with Bristol Myers Squibb to address cardiovascular disease in rural communities
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) has launched a partnership with Bristol Myers Squibb to address health-related social needs and care coordination for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The two organizations are piloting specialized training for pharmacy technicians in community health. “We are pleased to partner with BMS to improve access to care for people in rural communities,” said B. Douglas Hoey, pharmacist, CEO of NCPA. “The NCPA Innovation Center has partnered with the 25 rural pharmacies to improve cardiovascular outcomes through care coordination, screenings, transition of care interventions, and making sure patients have access to the medicines they need to sustain and improve health. Community pharmacists and their teams are increasingly playing a bigger role in the health care of Americans, and we are excited to create new, sustainable models of pharmacy-based care.” Pharmacist-community health worker teams in 25 rural pharmacies across Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri will be trained through a rigorous curriculum to more effectively evaluate patients with higher risk of CVD and guide them toward appropriate health care providers for further care and evaluation. Additionally, NCPA is creating new access points at these same independent pharmacies for screening, monitoring and management of cardiovascular disease, funded through a separate and independent grant by BMS, as part of a pilot program to evaluate the impact of enhanced access to critical health care services in medically underserved communities.
