DENVER – Notable Systems is shifting from selling off-the-shelf artificial intelligence (AI) products to serving as a consultant for enterprise customers, saying providers need more strategic guidance to fully capitalize on rapidly advancing automation technology.
As part of its new AI Transformation Program (AITP), the company embeds a team with a customer to identify its most important business objectives and then helps design, customize and implement a solution to achieve them.
“That’s the way AI is going to transform the workplace,” said Steve Johnson, CEO and co-founder of Notable Systems. “We’ve learned over the last couple of years that it takes rolling up your sleeves with a client, not just plugging in a solution that works for everyone. Whether it’s reducing denial rates or speeding up the time from referral to therapy – there needs to be a close-knit relationship and you really have to be thoughtful about it.”
The model has already been implemented with customers like National Seating & Mobility (NSM), Advanced Diabetes Supply and Orthofix, Johnson said.
XiFin partnership validates model
Notable Systems' relationship with XiFin, a San Diego-based workflow automation company that primarily serves pharmacies and laboratories, has also served as a proving ground for the company's new approach.
Notable Systems has developed an intelligent tool called Correspondence Manager for XiFin that separates, categorizes and routes inbound communications, including payer response, payments, denials, provider messages and patient communications.
“XiFin has been a great model for what we want to do,” he said. “We have a technology that has dealt with their unique situation – correspondence sorting – and we have weekly scrums to discuss new requirements or interesting problems.”
Notable Systems recently received an investment from XiFin, and the two companies have entered into a multi-year strategic alliance.
The closer working relationship also gives both companies opportunities to expand their reach into each other's core markets, Johnson said.
Company restructures around AI strategy
The shift in Notable Systems' business model has also required the company to right-size its operations, leading it to part ways with both customers and employees.
Before the restructuring, the company had grown from about two customers to about 40, Johnson said.
“We’ve worked with our partners like Valere to introduce them to customers who aren’t interested in AITP,” he said. “We’re trying to change those relationships in a way that suits both the customer and Notable.”
As part of the transition, Notable Systems has focused its staffing on team members who are most closely aligned with the AITP model and has expanded its investment in key areas such as engineering.
Early customer response positive
Johnson says customers that have adopted the AITP program have responded positively to the company's new direction and the additional level of engagement.
“We’re just in the second inning of the ballgame with AI and automation,” he said. “We don’t think anyone can compete with us in this new direction of ours.”
