Hope is not a strategy

Ask most anyone at Medtrade earlier this month, and they'll tell you there was something in the air.
Sure, questions over competitive bidding loomed, but there was a feeling that, while the industry has experienced significant attrition in the past few years, those providers that remain are on solid ground, if not motivated to be on solid ground. The data in this year's State of the Industry Report, which will be published on our website in December, seem to reflect that perception.
First, there's...

Sneak peek of the State of the Industry Report
October 26, 2016Liz Beaulieu, Editor
There are signs in our upcoming State of the Industry Report (keep an eye out for it in December) that the HME industry may be beginning to settle down after a few roller coaster years. 2011 through 2014 were mostly unkind to the industry, thanks to a Medicare competitive bidding program that has delivered round after round of cuts.
But in 2015, when we look at DME growth by product category, we see slight increases across categories, with the exception of hospital beds. For the wheelchair category,...
The year in blogs
December 2, 2015Liz Beaulieu, Editor
Managing Editor Theresa will attest that I've been trying to write a blog for a few days now. Sometimes it comes easy; sometimes it doesn't.
If you're Theresa, you don't force these things. But I have a to-do list that's getting longer and a new conference to avoid programming (ahem), so each day this week, at lunch, I've come back to writing this blog.
One of my go-to blogs in these situations is a list of the most read stories for the most recent year, but I already did that in September. (I must...
CMS's bull's eye on vents
April 30, 2015Liz Beaulieu, Editor
A few weeks ago, I was in a CPAP frame of mind; this week, it's vents.
First, CMS announced that non-invasive vents would be a new product category in Round 1 2017.
Then the agency announced in an MLN Matters article that providers who furnish vents—not only invasive vents, but also non-invasive vents—“must meet all applicable requirements for accreditation, such as ensuring that frequent and substantial servicing is provided.”
What's the big deal? “Providers need to...
Down in the (data) dumps
October 24, 2012Liz Beaulieu, Editor
As users of our HME Databank very well know, we still don't have 2011 data for Provider Share (top providers) and Product Share (product utilization), and I'm profusely sorry about this.
Believe me, I'm as upset about it as the Databank users that I've been talking to on a weekly, if not daily, basis.
I mean, it's almost 2013.
Argh.
For what it's worth, I made the request for this data in May, as I always have for the past several years. Typically, it takes the good folks at the PDAC (CMS's Pricing,...
